Chiefs’ Best Players Just That in 38-35 Super Bowl Win
I’m generally the guy who says if it’s a penalty in Week 1, it’s a penalty in the Super Bowl, but man that was a tough defensive holding penalty late to take away any hope the Eagles had of getting the ball back with a chance to win.
It was one of the best Super Bowls ever, with the Chiefs scoring on every second half possession for a 38-35 win. KC became just the second team ever to rally from a double digit halftime deficit.
How about Andy Reid? Playcalling genius - including two short second half TD’s in which the Eagles didn’t have a player in the same zip code.
Patrick Mahomes looked iffy for the second half after another ankle injury, but the MVP did MVP things in the second half.
The NFL overall of course is an embarrassment, rolling out Patrick Tillman’s memory in the pre-game when his widow wants nothing to do with them. “End Racism” just feet from the “Chiefs” logo in the endzone. An $800 million turf grown specifically for the Super Bowl, one that caused issues slipping and sliding all night.
Wild Snaps Skid by Beating Devils
Who knows if it will propel them on a much needed run, but the Wild secured a much needed win against a red-hot Devils team at The X on Saturday. Maligned centerman Ryan Hartman forced overtime early in the third period, and the Wild won 3-2 in a shootout. Filip Gustavsson with 22 saves. He’s just been better than Fleury.
New Jersey had been 9-1-1 in its last 11. Florida comes to town tonight, with the Cup champ Avs here Wednesday in a monumental Central Division matchup.
Wolves No Match for Morant, Memphis
The playoff rematch wasn’t much of one, as the Grizzlies ripped the Wolves 129-107 in Memphis on Friday. The Grizz neutralized everyone but Jaylen Nowell who led the Wolves with 21. ANT had just 17. Recently acquired Mike Conley scored nine points and missed three of four 3-pointers while turning the ball over three times. D-Lo? Helped the Lakers to a win in his first game.
Minnesota, which has rotated wins and losses for the last eight games, is in Dallas tonight.
Gopher Hockey Not Champs Yet
The Gopher men failed to clinch the Big 10 regular season title when Wisconsin handed them their first regulation loss in nine games, 3-1 on Saturday in Madison. It marked just the second time this season the high-flying Gophers didn’t score at least two goals. Minnesota is still comfortably in control of the Big 10, needing to win just one of its final four games. The Gophers are at Penn State this weekend. The teams split a series at Mariucci in November.
Speaking of missed opportunities, the Gopher women will be thinking this week about a two-goal lead, as well as allowing three goals in the final five minutes of a wild 7-5 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday. The Gophers were up 2-0, then down 4-2, before tying things at 4-4 midway through the third before the wheels came off. A win essentially would have given the Gophers the WCHA title, needing just to sweep St. Thomas. Instead, Minnesota enters the final weekend of the regular season needing help - they’re three behind No. 1 Ohio State, which plays those same Wisconsin Badgers this weekend.
Gopher BB
Eight straight losses for the Gopher men, including Sunday’s 68-56 home loss to Iowa. They’re at Michigan State on Wednesday.
The women took Wisconsin to overtime before losing their sixth straight, 76-70. They look for their third conference win of the season when they host Nebraska on Wednesday.
