Denver visits Miami tonight in the NBA Finals trying to take a commanding 3-1 lead heading back home. In the NHL, Vegas has a 3-1 stranglehold heading home after nearly surrendering a three-goal lead in Game 4. Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk is questionable for Game 5, which is Tuesday. Tough weekend for Panthers co-owner Vinnie Viola, who also co-owns Belmont favorite and runner-up Forte.
Unreal ending of the Canadian Open - as Nick Taylor sunk this 72-foot putt to become the first Canadian to win the tournament since 1954. One of the best weeks in golf is upon us, with a primetime U.S. Open from Los Angeles Country Club.
Twins Take 2-of-3 from Blue Jays
The Twins took two of three from the Blue Jays in Toronto, but watched Emilio Pagan self implode (again) Sunday, as the Twins lost a two-run lead in the eighth and fell 7-6. The Twins had rallied for a similar win Saturday, thanks to a Carlos Correa home run.
Correa had two more hits Sunday and his batting average is up to .217 - he’s making $200 million over the next six years. But he is heating up. Royce Lewis had three hits Sunday. Pagan gave up a three-run homer in the eighth to Cavan Biggio, who I watched run around the clubhouse when covering Astros games for ESPN.
Winning two of three gets the Twins back to the .500 mark at 33-33. Joey Gallo, meanwhile, spent the weekend hitting bombs in St. Paul on a rehab assignment.
The Twins return home for TEN games at Target Field - pretty big stretch of games against the Brewers, Tigers and Red Sox. The Brewers are similarly underperforming and around the .500 mark; the Tigers have dropped nine of 10 to fall out of the AL Central race, and the Red Sox are in last place in the East. Can the Twins win…seven of the 10?
Lynx Rally Past L.A.
Plenty of good mojo at Target Center Sunday, with the Lynx honoring Sylvia Fowles and the team’s 25-year anniversary, which meant every player from the heyday was back in the building. That includes Maya Moore, who hadn’t been back since retiring.
The Lynx needed all the good feels, rallying in the fourth quarter for a 91-86 win over L.A. Napheesa Collier poured in 24 points. First-round pick Tiffany Mitchell added 17 as the Lynx scored 17 straight points down the stretch.
Minnesota has won two of three - baby steps after a terrible start - and pays a return visit to L.A. Friday.
Loons Sunk by Former ‘Mate in 4-0 Loss to Montreal
Former Loons forward Mason Toye scored two of Montreal’s four goals in the Loons’ 4-0 loss North of the Border on Sunday. The Loons scoring zero goals is not a surprise - their season-log is chock full of 1-1, 1-0 and 2-1 games. However, giving up four isn’t their norm.
In the South Metro, the Aurora improved to 6-0 - the season’s halfway point - beating Chicago City 3-1 yesterday. They play Green Bay on Wednesday at home.
