Women’s World Cup
U.S. plays Sweden in the round of 16 Sunday at 4 a.m. The overwhelming favorite heading into the World Cup, the Americans tied two of their three round robin games. We’ve already seen big upsets in the knockout stage.
Leagues Cup
Loons play at Columbus in the round of 32 Friday. Minnesota brought back one of my favorites Jan Gregus back via trade (Duck, Duck, Gregus).
Lynx host the Liberty tonight. All-Star Napheesa Collier is still a week away from returning from injury.
Seems too early for pre-season football. It’s fun being able to root against Aaron Rodgers and the Jets at the same time. The Vikings open up Thursday, Aug. 10 against Seatte.
Twins Take Two of Three from Cardinals; Keuchel Called Up
If the Twins clubhouse was bothered by the front office making no moves at the deadline, it hasn’t showed, as the team took two of three from the Cardinals after the deadline. If they keep taking series, they’ll win the division.
Yesterday, they won 5-3 in St. Louis, as Sonny Gray won for the first time since *checks notes* April 30! He’s their No. 3 starter! He was staked to a 4-0 lead in the second thanks to home runs by Ryan Jeffers and Michael A. Taylor and never looked back. Joe Ryan, who has allowed 17 home runs in his last 32 1/3 innings, has gone on the disabled list, and the Twins have finally signed Dallas Keuchel to a major league contract to replace him.
The one time stud and 2015 AL Cy Young winner has been biding his time on a minor league deal in St. Paul, with a 1.13 ERA in six starts and International League Pitcher of the Month honors. But he posted a 9.20 ERA in 14 major league starts last season. Keuchel is expected to start one of the Twins’ home games against Arizona this weekend.
On a non related note, the Twins have promoted top prospect Brooks Lee, a shortstop, to St. Paul after hitting 11 homers in Double A.
