The LeBron James Movie —Shooting Stars: Memories, MVPs, and Monogamy?!
Peacock recently premiered the Shooting Stars movie chronicling LeBron James’ story before entering the NBA draft. The film centers around James, while also including a focus on his four best friends collectively known as the “Fab Five.” Shooting Stars is also a tribute to good old fashioned monogamy as one of the most surprising things I learned from watching was that the self-proclaimed GOAT of basketball may have only ever slept with his wife!
Shooting Stars starts when the crew is in little league basketball before entering high school. The dynamic of Lebron’s posse is compelling, their love and connection is reminiscent of the kids in Stranger Things. Do I make this comparison because the actor Caleb McLaughlin who portrays Lil Dru, is one of the kids from Strangers Things? Perhaps, but watch it for yourself. They are a group of lovable misfits that are more just friends, they are family.
When the boys are young, basketball is their life. Even off the court, the only video games they played were basketball. Girls were not in the mix of activities. At one point in the film, Lil Dru comments on how Bron (LeBron) never seemed to get a girl. Savannah Brinson, now Savannah James, was a cheerleader at a rival high school and supposedly met LeBron at a high school football game early in their high school years. He invited her to come to some of his basketball games and they were together from that moment on.
James started on the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers fall of 2003, Savannah gave birth to their first child Bronny (LeBron James Jr.) in 2004, and the couple wed in 2013. Savannah then gave birth to Zhuri their third and “final” child a year later in 2014. So if Shooting Stars reveals that LeBron wasn’t with any girls before he met Savannah, and he has been with her ever since they met, does that mean the NBA superstar has only ever slept with his high school sweetheart wife? That would be a surprising stat on the back of his basketball card to say the least.
Are LeBron and Savannah James the epic fairytale love story that Nora Ephron has been promising us does exist? The Internet would beg to differ . . .
Back in 2015, Savannah James shared this somewhat cryptic post on her Instagram. At the time there was speculation that the singer Rihanna was more than just a super fan of the King. Could that post be related? Then back in 2022 when Adam Levine’s messages to Summer Stroh were leaked, the Instagram model had some harsh words to say against LeBron.
“Don’t be dumb. You are famous, Adam, you know how f****** famous you are. You can be a little sly about it. Leonardo DiCaprio, I know for a fact, I mean, I’ve never been invited but my friends have. He goes out, and his bodyguards or whatever go up to the girls, ask them if they want to go back to his house or wherever. They sign an NDA. LeBron James, same s***.”
Recently, Instagram personality YesJulz posted a video acknowledging and disputing all rumors of her having an affair with LeBron James back when he had lived in Miami.
As salty a person as I am, I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Is LeBron the MVP of Monogamy? I guess we’ll never know. As far as the Shooting Stars movie goes, personal opinions on LeBron are irrelevant. It is a timeless tale of friends coming of age together that also happen to play basketball. If you can put aside any dislike you have for the superstar, it is a heart-felt and fun sports film.
