No Pyro, No Party — Chicago Wolves Pregame Show.
I’ve always been a big fan of using invigorating pyrotechnics at sporting events. Thunderous booms awaken fans’ senses and flames act as a beacon to everyone on the concourse that it’s time to get into your seat before the action starts. Well, the Chicago Wolves take this to the extreme. Their pregame pyro show is unlike anything I’ve ever seen inside a hockey arena as flames and fireworks shoot throughout the building.
However, there’s just one small problem… their arena has a wooden roof!
Now I’m certainly no fire safety expert but shooting fireworks at a massive wooden roof just doesn’t seem like the brightest idea to me. If the team is trying to wake up the audience for puck drop, they certainly did a great job inducing some fear as everyone takes a glace towards their nearest exit.
The chaos of the pregame show was par for the course when comparing it to the rest of the gameday atmosphere. The whole experience really reminds me of one of my favorite phrases that’s typically reserved for Eastern European soccer hooligans – “No Pyro, No Party”. The Wolves kicked the night off with the pyro and the party continued during the game.
Upon further thought, maybe the reasoning for the fire being shot towards a wooden roof is a lot simpler. Afterall, they do play in Allstate Arena so if anything does go amiss during the pregame spectacular, they have no reason to worry – “They’re in good hands”.
