Say Yep to Jordan Peele's “Nope.”
Yep or nope answers to your questions before you see the film.
Director and writer Jordan Peele’s third film hit theaters July 22. Entitled “Nope,” this film fits right into the horror film niche that Peele paved the way for with his past films “Get Out” (2017) and “Us” (2019).
With a successful opening weekend of $44 million, this film continues to gain traction and is going to be talked about more. In case you still feel left in the dark about what to even expect for this film, here are some yep and nope answers to questions you may have. Spoiler free, of course.
Is “Nope” Super Scary?
Nope.
This film, like other films from Jordan Peele, is a different kind of scary. It is not like the era of slashers and exorcists. “Nope” is more anxiety inducing than jump scares. Although this film is classified as a horror film, it leans more to the genres of science fiction, thriller and a little bit of comedy. But don’t be fooled, there are still some scary and unsettling scenes in this film.
Are There Any Stand Out Performances By The Cast of “Nope?”
Yep.
Keke Palmer is receiving all the praise for her performance in this film. This blockbuster film with a big name director was the step she needed to take to finally shed some light on her acting talent. We will definitely be seeing more of her in the future. Although she was the stand out, Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun also played interesting characters with fascinating performances.
Is “Nope” For Everyone?
Nope.
There have been mixed reviews from fans and viewers. Some viewers feel the film was not as good as the other two films put out by Peele and the highly anticipated release did not exceed their expectations.
Others enjoyed this film and appreciated the uniqueness and originality of “Nope” as well as its nod to the essence of 80s movies, like Steven Spielberg's “Close Encounters.” The difference in opinion is one reason why this film is being heavily talked about. However, an open mind is the best way to go into watching “Nope” to experience the film fully and help form your own opinions. That way, after the film, you can put your two cents in online discourses.
Does “Nope” Have a Message/Is it Confusing?
Yep.
In typical Jordan Peele fashion, the film has its fair share of horror and comedic relief as well as social commentary. This film does have a message, but it takes backstage at times to the main spectacle of the film. In other words, the meaning behind the film isn’t as obvious compared to Peele's past films like “Get Out.” Still, many people take interest in these films because of the analysis of hidden meanings and themes. In other words, you most likely will leave the theater having questions or theories.
