Today marks the end of the last month without meaningful baseball until November.
Hibbing freshman Whitaker Rewertz sent his team to The Tourney for the first time since 2011, but it’s his post-game interview F bomb that’s giving him national attention. Give us sectional finals on network TV in the metro, please. One more round of games tonight, The Tourney begins Wednesday.
Hope you didn’t stay up watching Minnesota sports last night because…
ANT Ejected, Faces Suspension as Wolves Lose to Lakers
I’m a little tired of Anthony Edwards. I know, he’s not going to change.
The Wolves star, who has amassed hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for swearing and criticizing officials, was ejected in last night’s 111-102 loss at the Lakers. His two technicals give him 16 for the season, which means he must sit out tonight’s game at Utah unless one is rescinded.
Look, he’s a passionate guy. His first tech came in a shoving match in the first half, okay. But after he thought he drew a foul late in the third quarter, he sat on the floor and swore at the official.
According to ESPN, ANT is the first NBA player to reach 16 T’s since 2016-17.
Another breakout game from rookie Terrance Shannon, Jr., who finished with 25 points. Inconsistencies among the Wolves’ so called best continue to plague them. Naz Reid had three points in 31 minutes. Donte DiVincenzo did return from a lengthy injury absence, scoring nine points. But the Wolves had no answer for LeBron (33 points, 17 rebounds, six assists).
At least the game was competitive, because...
Wild Blown Out in Utah
Minnesota was non competitive in a 6-1 loss at Utah, its ninth loss this season by four or more goals Clayton Keller had a goal and four assists as the Wild’s penalty kill woes again reared their ugly head, allowing two goals in the first period.
For years, it’s the “vaunted Wild power play” that’s drawn the ire of fans. But they can’t defend this season, and it’s something Bill Guerin is going to have to address at the trade deadline, or it won’t matter when Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson-Ek get back from injury.
The Wild suffered just its eighth regulation loss on the road (meaning the majority of those four-goal losses have happened at home), and they’re at Colorado tonight. That’s always a chance for a four-goal loss.
Gopher Hockey
Minnesota is in control of its down destiny when it visits Penn State (7-1-2 in its last 10) in the last B10 series. The Gophers are two points ahead of MIchigan State, who have a much easier road playing Notre Dame. The Irish are 13 points behind the next-to-last place team in the Big 10. The regular season winner gets a first-round bye; the rest of them play a best-of-three.
The 4-5 series between UMD and SCSU could get a little interesting, but don’t expect many upsets on the first weekend of the WCHA Tournament. The third-seeded Gophers went 4-0-0 against first-round opponent Minnesota State with a 24-9 goal advantage. It’s hard not to see a Gopher/Buckeye semiefinal matchup next weekend in the WCHA’s Final Faceoff in Duluth.
