New-Look Wolves Lose Season Opener in LA
You knew it would take awhile for the new-look Wolves to gel, but just a bad night in their 110-103 season-opening loss at Los Angeles late last night. Hours after signing Rudy Gobert to a three-year, $110-million extension, the Wolves gave up 72 points in the paint and couldn’t grab a defensive rebound in a 110-103 loss to the Lakers.
Far from all on Rudy, of course. The Wolves also had 15 turnovers - seven combined from Mike Conley and Anthony Edwards. They looked disjointed, although they got a solid 16-point, nine-rebound, four-assist Wolves debut from Julius Randle. Edwards led the Wolves with 27 points, but he missed 15 of 25 field goal attempts.
The Wolves had no answer for Anthony Davis - 36 points, 16 rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The Bronny James thing is a farce. Minus-five in three minutes, and if his last name was Stanzel he’d still be at USC. Or, not even admitted there. I hope the Griffey’s didn’t pay too much for their tickets.
The Wolves play at the Kings on Thursday.
Stanley Cup Champ Panthers No Match for Wild
The Wild must have minded their Ps and Qs on their two nights off in suburban Miami, because they showed up last night and just embarrassed the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers 5-1.
Five Wild players had at least two points, led by defenseman Jake Middleton (three assists). This one was such a laugher that, outside of Kirill Kaprizov, no forward had to play more than 17 minutes. Kaprizov had two assists, and five different Wild players scored.
This is mostly the same team as last year, and they’re 4-0-2 and still haven’t trailed in regulation. That’s the second longest streak to begin an NHL season. Minnesota is off to its best start since 2008-09, when yours truly was manning seat 151 in the Al Shaver Press box. Things didn’t turn out great that season. Or any season.
Minnesota visits Tampa Bay on Thursday, before visiting both Pennsylvania teams to wrap up this seven-game road trip.
