Hutchinson beat Red Wing 20-1 in girls hockey Saturday; two hat tricks from Hutchinson. Red Wing’s goalie Jocelyn Mrozek allowed 20 goals - but made 45 saves!
After three weeks off, it’s conference semifinal week in MLS. The Loons are at the LA Galaxy on Sunday at 5.
Gopher football is back, hosting No. 4 Penn State on Saturday at 2:30 in one of the bigger games in Dinkytown in recent memory.
Vikings Outlast Two-Win Titans to Move to 8-2
Next time they think they got jobbed, Vikings fans can think back to Sunday’s 23-13 win over a woeful Titans team. Yes Minnesota was the better team, and was going to win anyways, but they were awarded SEVEN first downs via penalty to win their third straight.
The Vikings are at the Bears next week trying to finish a 3-0 road trip and win four in a row overall. They’re still one game back of Detroit, which whipped Jacksonville to move past the Chiefs as the Super Bowl favorites per Vegas. The Vikings and Lions meet in Week 18 in Detroit.
Sam Darnold’s pitch to Aaron Jones on the third play of the game was a fumble, and this game had a certain feeling. But the Titans just aren’t that good offensively, especially with the Vikings defense all over Will Levis. They sacked him five times.
Darnold threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for a score too. The Vikings couldn’t get much going on the ground - Jones had 39 yards. Darnold was the team’s leading rusher in the first half.
But the Titans had 13 penalties, more than half of which gave the Vikings a first down. Some were legit, some, well…let’s just say Titans coach Brian Callahan had good reason to almost get tossed from the game after an alleged targeting penalty on what looked to be a relatively clean hit on Jordan Addison in the end zone.
Randle’s 3-Pointer Lifts Wolves Past Suns
It took 14 games for the Julius Randle signature moment. The off-season acquisition hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Wolves a 120-117 win over the Suns on Sunday at Target Center.
Minnesota has won back-to-back games for just the third time this season heading into Thursday’s game in Toronto.
Randle scored 34 points and Anthony Edwards had 24. The Wolves had no answer for Devin Booker (44 points), but their role players outplayed their Suns’ counterparts.
Shorthanded Wild Beaten by Stars
Just days after Fox 9’s amazingly well done No Stars documentary focused on the North Stars leaving for Dallas, the “South” Stars continued their dominance over Minnesota’s current NHL team.
The Stars beat the Wild 2-1 on Saturday at The X. Mason Marchment scored twice for the Stars, which took advantage of a depleted Wild lineup without Joel Eriksson-Ek, Jonas Brodin and Mats Zuccarello. The first two could play Tuesday in St. Louis. Zuccarello, who took a puck near the groin last week, had surgery and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
The Stars have won seven in a row versus Minnesota counting the playoffs.
Gopher Hockey
Bemidji State upset the Gopher men 3-1 in the second half of their home-and-home on Saturday, snapping a nine-game Minnesota winning streak. The Gophers are at Notre Dame this weekend.
The No. 3 Gopher women swept No. 4 UMD on the road, moving their winning streak to six games. Minnesota is 7-1-1 away from Ridder and 3-2-0 at home. The Gophers play a home-and-home with St. Cloud State this weekend.
Gopher Hoops
The Gopher men were on the ropes with another sub 20-point first half against Yale on Saturday, but they rallied big time in the second half for a 59-56 win over the Bulldogs at home. Dawson Garcia had 24 points. Minnesota hosts Cleveland State on Tuesday.
The Gopher women improved to 5-0, steamrolling Oregon State and SMU in Tempe. They host Eastern Illinois on Wednesday.
