Random Athletes

One of my favorite Twitter accounts is @RandomAthletes, which just posts photos of random former college athletes all day. There are often funny photos, or names Sometimes it’ll be from a random D2 or D3 college I know. Well imagine my surprise (and yours now) when I recognized the face and name of one of the featured athletes earlier this week! Here’s former East Ridge/Hill Murray hockey standout Kyler Yeo, son of former Wild head coach and one of my favorite people Mike Yeo.

Wild Wins on Long Island; Special Night for Lou

There’s a tradition in hockey, particularly when a player returns to a place he’s played before, or his hometown, he’ll put some “money on the board” and if the team wins he’ll put money in the team pot for a party later in the season.

What do you suppose Vinni Letteiri put on the white markerboard at UBS Arena before his grandpa, the great Lou Nanne, did the TV broadcast with Anthony LaPanta? Letteiri scored his first goal with the Wild, igniting a second period comeback in a game the Wild wound up winning 4-2. Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson-Ek scored 42 seconds apart in the third period for the final margin. Toughguy Pat Maroon had two assists - he’s got seven, which is just three less than Mats Zuccarello. Maroon, Eriksson-Ek and Marcus Foligno have been an absolute force and the Wild’s best line this season.

It looks to be Marc-Andre Fleury’s net for a bit, although he and Filip Gustavsson are likely to split Thursday/Friday at the Rangers and at Buffalo. Lou will be on the call for both games, by the way.

Wolves Cooking Something Special

Are the Wolves peaking too early? I kid, I kid. But Wolves fans, you can’t keep up with 48 minutes of high intensity basketball for another 70-plus games.

The Wolves improved to 4-2 with a 114-109 OT win over previously undefeated Boston at Target Center on Monday. Two of Minnesota’s four wins have been the opponent’s lone loss (6-1 Denver, 5-1 Boston).

On a night they only got seven points from a pouting Karl Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards continued his ascent, pouring in 38 points and willing this team to win. He also had nine rebounds and seven assists. This kid’s going to be a star for a loooooong time.

The news wasn’t all positive, as Jordan McLaughlin sprained a knee ligament. The oft-injured Wolf will be reevaluated in a month.

The Wolves host New Orleans tonight.

Gopher BB Beats Bethune-Cookman in Season Opener

The Gopher men’s hoops teams scored more points in Monday’s 80-60 season opening win over Bethune-Cookman than they scored in any game last season. A promising start, for sure. Dawson Garcia, the Gophers’ best player, scored 23 points, had 14 rebounds and six assists. They’ve got a Friday date with UT San Antonio.

The Gopher women open up the Dawn Pltzeweit era tonight at home against LIU.
