Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.2.24
My latest Make Glove not W.A.R. with MLB.com’s Pat Donnelly. Are the Twins cheap, or realistic? Could Royce be the best Twin ever? Why wasn’t Mauer respected more locally? That and more, please give it a watch and/or listen. Good for the road to the cabin.

Eighty-five year old JoAnn Carner shot her age at the U.S. Senior Women’s Open.
Still too early to have NFL on my TV, and the new kickoff doesn’t exactly have me running to my couch to watch, either.
Well earned 8 year, $68 million extension for the Wild’s Brock Faber, although this team’s young stars have underperformed the last few years after getting big time deals. I don’t expect the same from Faber.
Three Things I Loved Watching in Paris
Born in any other generation, Suni Lee and Brazil’s Rebecca Andrade would be the greatest of that generation. But neither one is going to give back their medals earned behind Simone Biles in the women’s all around yesterday. Biles was actually in third place after two rotations, but her floor routine is the best that’s ever been. For obvious reasons, I’m partial to East Sider Sunisa Lee. who battled two serious kidney infections that caused her to gain 45 pounds less than two years ago. She wasn’t even a shoe-in for the Olympic team going into trials six weeks ago. She, too, shook off a slow start, as she was seventh after a ho hum vault. They’ll all compete in individual events this weekend and next week…could Lee get a fifth overall medal in three years and third gold in the uneven bars? It’ll be interesting to see who, if any, of the top four U.S. gymnasts remain for L.A. in 2028.
I’m loving the 3X3 basketball because of the party like atmosphere in the crowd, and also trying to figure out how the U.S. is 0-4 and in serious danger of missing the medal round. Obviously the U.S. doesn’t focus on this sport very much. Jimmer Fredette is hurt. Kareem Maddox, who works in basketball ops for the Wolves, is doing his best and I like to watch him play. They’ve got two games today - France at 11:35 and 1-3 China at 3:35. They likely have to win out to finish in the top six (of eight) and advance.
The run walk is wild…and also narrated by St. Paul’s own (well, current resident) Carrie Tollefson.
Three Things I Can’t Wait to Watch from Paris
Rosemount’s Payton Otterdahl, who looks like someone I’d like to have beers with (can someone make that happen) qualifies in the shot put today as track and field gets undreway.
Trampoline finals today (women’s already happened, men’s is at 12:50 p.m.)
Men’s soccer plays in a quarterfinal match against Morocco. Yes, it’s an U-23 Tournament at The Olympics, but good to see men’s soccer relevant again for the U.S.A.
Twins Host Hapless White Sox for Three
MLB teams don’t do guaranteed win nights, but if there was ever a time to offer some swag if you show up and the home team loses, it’s tonight. I’ll make my Twins season debut as they host the White Sox tonight at Target Field to kick off a three-game series.
The White Sox have lost SEVENTEEN STRAIGHT games. That’s a tenth of the season. They’ve been outscored by 229 runs - that’s more than two per game. No other AL team has been outscored by more than 94 runs!
It’s time to turn the Twins’ attention to holding onto the final wild card spot (currently two games clear of Boston), because Cleveland is going to win this division.
