Three Things I Loved Watching in Paris

You can make a case for Amit Elor as the most dominant American athlete of the last five years. The 20-year-old California female wrestler became the youngest American wrestler to ever win gold, but it’s how she did it that made headlines. She outscored her opponents 31-2, and didn’t allow her opponent a point in the final three matches. And, she hasn’t lost a match in five years!

What a day for the Americans on the track, as Cole Hocker stunned a star-studded 1500-meter field with a gold medal, and then Gabby Thomas took control early and never looked back in the 200 meters.

Sophia Smith scored in extra time, sending the U.S. women’s national team to the gold medal soccer game against Brazl with a 1-0 win over Germany. Remember, this is by and large the same team knocked out of the World Cup in the quarterfinals a year ago. The gold medal game is Saturday at 10 a.m.

Three Things I Can’t Wait to Watch from Paris

Today, Medal round games for the Americans today in men’s volleyball (Poland), water polo (Australia), women’s basketball (Nigeria) and men’s beach volleyball (Qatar). All those are quarterfinal games. Women’s hoops tries for its 59th straight Olympic win.

The U.S. men’s hoops team has been untested but that could change as they take on Serbia in a semifinal match Thursday. A pretty darn good France team, or possibly German, awaits the winner. France dismantled Canada yesterday despite limited minutes from the Wolves’ Rudy Gobert, who had surgery on a finger injured earlier this week. Rudy isn’t a great pass catcher to begin with…

Break dancing starts Friday...

Twins Finally Lose

The Twins’ five-game winning streak is over after they fell 7-3 at Wrigley to the Cubs last night. A resurgent Pablo Lopez had been good for more than a month, but got roughed up for three in the first inning and the Twins never fully recovered.

Starting to get worried about Byron Buxton, the hottest Twin outside Royce Lewis (who homered again last night). Buxton missed his second straight game with lower back stiffness, although Rocco Baldelli promised he’ll be back by Friday at the latest. Still waiting on Carlos Correa to make any sort of progress with his injury, too.

Cleveland was rained out. The Guardians are four games up in the Central. The Twins play the Cubs again today before four at home against Cleveland this weekend.
