Twins

Twins Wild Card tickets go on sale today. Magic number is one with eight to play. It’ll be nice to see them clinch at home this weekend. Now, they could avoid the Wild Card altogether by getting the No. 2 seed. It’s a longshot but you’d have thought I was ludicrous for suggesting it a month ago. Four back of Houston with nine to play. Three on tap at Target Field against the hapless and Ohtani-less Angels starting tonight.

Wild

Wild opens pre-season Sunday in Denver. Ryan Hartman is banged up. Flower will decide about retirement after the season. Pre-season hockey isn’t my thing, but LA and Arizona are playing in Australia at 11 p.m. Minnesota time tonight and Saturday night.

Vikings

It’s a must win for both the 0-2 Vikings and 0-2 Chargers Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Chargers traded RB Cam Akers to the Vikings on Wednesday. Turns out maybe Alexander Mattison isn’t all that good. Akers is often hurt.

Gophers

It wasn’t that long ago that Northwestern football had a resurgence. That’s a thing of the past. If you’ve got a weekend to kill and $5 you can get into Saturday’s Gopher game at Northwestern. The Wildcats are coming off a 24-point loss to Duke. Minnesota is 2-1 and trying to rebound from last week’s loss at UNC.

Lynx

Lynx lost Game 3 at home to Connecticut to fail to advance to the WNBA Semifinals. A good run considering the 0-6 start to the season. Better days ahead.

Loons

An inexcusable loss for the Loons late Wednesday in L.A. against the Galaxy. Minnesota led 3-1 at halftime but fell 4-3 against the second worst team in the West. So if the playoffs started today, the Loons would be out of the playoffs. They’re in 10th. Minnesota hosts first-place St. Louis (an expansion team) on Saturday. St. Louis has three more wins than any other team in the Western Conference. Time is running out for the Loons - only five games left. Three of those five are at home, although that hasn’t necessarily been an advantage.
