Thor, God of Thunder, visits Kinnick Stadium.
The Iowa Hawkeyes' week three game against the Nevada Wolf Pack could not have been more theatrical if it was directed by the Russo Brothers. This game lasted twice as long as their Avengers Endgame epic three-hour run time. In Marvel Endgame fashion, we saw all our favorite boys show up for one another, and pull together to accomplish an outlandish feat.
If you haven’t committed to watching all the super hero movies orbiting the universe of the MCU, I promise not to judge you. That said, I ask that you do not judge me when I admit I wasn’t able to commit to staying up through all the lightning delays of this game. In my defense, the kickoff time was 6:40P and after more than one weather delay, the game was set to resume at 12:45A. The night finally ended with Iowa head coach, Kirk Ferentz, delivering his post-game conference talk at 2:30A on Sunday morning.
So before Thor showed up dropping his hammer and throwing bolts, Brian Ferentz was an Iron Man level leader of the team. After being shamelessly trolled online on Cameo by Hawkeye fans this week, the Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz (son of head coach Kirk Ferentz) pulled off some outstanding game play. The Hawkeyes were up 17-0 with only five minutes left in the third quarter before the weather hiatus.
Brian Ferentz, had playmakers RB Gavin Williams and WR Keagan Johnson back on the field after missing the first two weeks of play due to injury. Having them on the field felt like the final battle scene in Endgame when Spiderman and Doctor Strange show up to help the overworked and overwhelmed Avengers team. Ferentz utilized his back to the game weapons, as well as targeting my first two week favorite WR Arland Bruce IV, The Offensive Boss, and freshman sensation RB Kaleb Johnson. The offense was able to put up a total of 27 points, more than they scored in the first two weeks combined.
Although there were not many fans left around to witness the win, it does not take away from the significance of their performance. To have to come back into game mode after three different weather delays isn’t easy for any player. But these Hawkeyes kept is sticky and persisted taking it one play at a time getting them a win fans can finally feel good about. The defense performed as outstanding as ever not allowing the Wolf Pack to put up a single point. The offense gave us a glimpse of what we hope to see when the Hawkeyes transition to conference play next week. While we may not be guaranteed a winning season this year, I am feeling more confident that this team is going to give fans a lot to cheer about.
