Yung Gravy: The Minnesotan Rapper You Definitely Don’t Want Around Your Mom.
Rap music often contains themes like drugs, alcohol, partying, money and young women. But Minnesotan-born rapper, Yung Gravy, prefers to talk about older women in his songs. Specifically, moms.
Matthew Hauri, Yung Gravy.
Born in Rochester, Minnesota, Yung Gravy started to make a name for himself on SoundCloud in 2017 when he released “Mr. Clean,” and “1 Thot 2 Thot Red Thot Blue Thot.” Hauri shifted his focus to making music after graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in marketing, Some of his friends were on SoundCloud, so he decided to give it a try. Five years later, Yung Gravy is a well-known rapper and will be going on tour this year.
Yung Gravy has released three albums, seven EPs, and one mixtape. His newest release is his album Gasanova and Baby Gravy 2, which features his best friend bbno$, a Canadian singer. Even if you hadn’t previously ever considered yourself a fan of hip hop music, you might find Gravy’s take on rap to be quite different and refreshing to the industry.
That “Groovy” Style.
Lots of rap music revolves around catchy beats and clever lines that rhyme in a fun and interesting way. For Gravy, his style is quite unique from present day rappers. By contrast, his beats and music tend to be inspired by ‘50s and ‘60s styles. This influence is reflected in a lot of the art Gravy uses for his album covers, or for his brand in general.
Just like his interest in older women, Yung Gravy prefers to draw his inspiration from older music. Gravy is a self proclaimed lover of “MILFS,” and enjoys incorporating mom lines in his raps. In “Mr. Clean,” Gravy says, “I’m with your mom in the kitchen, makin’ blueberry muffins.” It’s unclear if Gravy and this specific mom are just spending some quality bonding time over baking, or something else… regardless you won’t forget the lyric.
Gravy also knows how to bring the ice cold of Minnesota to his music. While Minnesota is known for creating a steady stream of hockey legends and the occasional actor, it looks like being a rapper is also becoming a strong suit of the land of 10,000 lakes. And while Gravy may be a blonde dude from the Midwest, he’s more than capable of holding his own against the notorious names in the rap/hip-hop industry.
Yung Gravy’s world tour, of course, will include a stop back home. His concert in Minnesota will be at the Armory on January 15, 2022. Opening for Gravy on tour will be Dillon Francis, a DJ and electronic musician from Los Angeles. You may recognize his hit with DJ Snake, “Get Low.”
Regardless your current music preferences, you owe it to yourself to play “Oops” at least once at full volume while driving around or on your next Lyft home from the bar. And if you want to be there for Gravy’s triumphant return to Minnesota, we recommend getting your tickets now for a groovy and fun night at the Armory. But it’s probably best to leave your mom at home.
