Wild Wins in DC

The Wild began their four-game trip out East slowly - five shots halfway through the game - but their checking line turned the game around and the Wild beat the Caps 4-2 behind three defensemen goals. Minnesota has won three straight, have points in seven of eight and plays in Raleigh on Thursday.

Minnesota was going nowhere fast when Jordan Greenway, Joel Eriksson Ek and the combo of Ryan Hartman and Ryan Reaves on the wing swung the momentum late in the second. Jared Spurgeon had his seventh career two goal game, but it was Jonas Brodin’s goal, circling the entire offensive zone, that had people talking.

Filip Gustavsson, one of the most underrated goalies if not players in the NHL, made it stand up, including this sorcery save with the back of his skate. How did that puck not go in?

The Wild is now just five points back of first-place Dallas and Winnipeg in the Central, with two games in hand. Better yet, they’re seven points up on the last playoff spot.

Jazz Eek Out One-Point Win over Wolves

One team wearing purple in Minnesota managed to win on the long weekend. The Utah Jazz and old friend Malik Beasley fended off the scrappy Wolves 126-125 in a Monday matinee at Target Center.

The Wolves are playing with fire with injuries right now. Anthony Edwards is still fighting the hip injury but had 29 points against Utah. Rudy Gobert (groin) played less than five minutes Monday, and just 13 the game before that.

Minnesota just isn’t deep enough to have their two best players - much less three - out of the lineup.

The Wolves are at West-leading Denver tonight in a nationally televised game on ESPN.

Gopher Hoops

The Gopher men led a good Illinois team early in the second, but depth won out as the Illini outlasted Minnesota 78-60 on the strength of a 12-0 second half run. Dawson Garcia led Minnesota with 17 points and Ta’Lon Cooper added 16. Illinois enjoyed a significant 54-28 advantage in points in the paint.

The Gophers host Purdue tomorrow.

Minnesota’s women are at Penn State tonight.
