Wild’s March to Penalty Box Hurts Them in Raleigh

The Wild is among the league leaders in many NHL categories, but their “lead” in penalty minutes is going to have them going nowhere fast soon. Carolina scored a pair of power play goals as the Wild spent too much time in the penalty box in a 5-2 loss in Raleigh last night.

Making matters worse, the Wild had a five-minute power play in the third period to try to get back on track and couldn’t connect on seven shots. They went shorthanded seven times - once on a wing and a prayer goalie interference challenge by Dean Evason once the Hurricanes went up 4-1 early in the third.

Matt Boldy scored for the Wild in his second game since signing a 7-year, $49 million contract that will for sure end the Wild career of Matt Dumba. No, they don’t play the same position, but in the Suter-Parise buyout era, there’s only so much bucks to go around. Dumba was actually a healthy scratch last night - not because a trade is imminent but because his play has been that bad lately, especially Tuesday in Washington.

Dumba is one of the most likeable players around, and one of three NHL level holdouts from my time at the Wild. Spent the day with his amazing family on Draft Day. But his play since a couple injuries has not justified his massive contract.

Kirill Kaprizov scored the other Wild goal - his 100th in the NHL. That tally actually put the Wild up 1-0, but old friend Brent Burns tied it 116 seconds later.

The Wild is in Florida on Saturday as the four-game road trip continues.

Wolves Take Nuggets to Wire, then Beat Raptors

A night after giving the best team in the West a scare while shorthanded, the Wolves returned home and eeked out a 128-126 win over the Raptors to move within a half game of sixth in the West. Still plenty of time to play, of course, but a sixth place finish avoids the play-in round.

Still without Rudy Gobert (and KAT), they got 25 points, including four straight three-pointers, from D-Lo and 23 from ANT. Kyle Anderson and Jaden McDaniels combined for 38 points in the frontcourt to help make up for Gobert’s absence.

The Wolves host Houston on Saturday.

Vikings Part Ways with Donatell

It took a day longer than I expected, but the Vikings officially moved on from defense coordinator Ed Donatell yesterday.
