Grand Old Day Is Back! Mark Your Calendar For Next Year.
Sunday, June 2, 2024.
If you don’t have plans (and if you do—consider us impressed), mark your calendar for Grand Old Day 2024 in Saint Paul. Grand Old Day returned this year. I attended and had an unforgettable time at this storied Saint Paul tradition. After a three-year hiatus due to the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this beloved event made a triumphant return, and boy, did it exceed all expectations!
The fact that the festival was returning after a three-year hiatus made the atmosphere even more electrifying. The joy and anticipation in the air were palpable as Minnesotans came together to celebrate community and revel in the spirit of togetherness. The day kicked off with an invigorating race, where participants of all ages displayed their athleticism. The subsequent parade, filled with vibrant floats and enthusiastic marching bands, infused the streets with a wave of color and cheer.
As I strolled down the vibrant streets of Grand Avenue, the first thing that caught my attention was the incredible live music stages scattered throughout the festival grounds. The infectious beats and melodic harmonies enveloped the air, beckoning me to follow the sound to a stage across from the Red Rabbit restaurant. And there, standing before me, was the incredibly talented band, Bad Bad Hats. Their energetic performance had the crowd on their feet. It was a very positive experience, and I could tell that the crowd had forgotten about the unwavering 90 degree heat.
The Bad Bad Hats weren’t the only band blazing the Grand Old Days stages either. If Grand Old Days had a hall of fame, the White Iron Band would be a first ballot entrant. Playing a mix of overs and originals, the White Iron Band are Grand Old Day legends, famous for their fist pumping, sweat drenched 3-hour sets without a break. Usually, capped off by the Minnesota anthem they made famous.
There was music galore at Grand Old Days. The Jayhawks performed on the Grand Stage powered by the Current, up and comer Brendan Bonin stole the show at the Iron Range bar, and Stillwater/Hudson troubadour Tim Sigler reminded us all the inherent value of perfectly done George Straight covers, white teeth, and a tight black t-shirt.
Of course, no visit to the Grand 'Ol Days festival would be complete without indulging in the delectable cheese curds. With a hint of nostalgia, I eagerly ordered a plate, and to my delight, they were just as good as I remembered. The perfect combination of crispy outer shell and gooey center was the ideal addition to the festival.
As I continued my journey, I was delighted to discover the various markets and local businesses that had set up shop along Grand Avenue. From unique crafts to mouthwatering food, there was no shortage of treasures to be found. The festival truly showcased the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity of the community, providing a platform for local talents to shine.
One of the most enchanting aspects of the Grand Old Days festival was the porch performances that popped up throughout the area. From skilled DJs spinning infectious beats to brave souls belting out karaoke classics, these impromptu shows added an extra layer of magic to the festivities. It was a reminder of the incredible community spirit that the festival fosters.
Despite the scorching 90-degree day, the lively crowds showed no signs of slowing down. Laughter, conversations, and contagious energy filled the air, creating an atmosphere of pure joy. It was heartwarming to see people of all ages coming together, forging connections and making memories.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the festival grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude. Grand Old Days had returned with a bang, showcasing the resilience and unwavering spirit of St. Paul. It was a testament to the power of community and the importance of coming together, especially after a challenging period of isolation.
This year's event was an absolute triumph, Grand Old Days had truly rekindled the spirit of St. Paul, and I am already looking forward to next year. See you there!
