The Return of The Jedi… or Jorts.
It’s summertime, AKA shorts season. Every year you tuck away the thick blue jeans from the midwest winter and bring out those denim angels they call jean shorts (or jorts). However, while the summers are getting hotter, the jorts are oddly getting longer, bringing back the long dad jorts.
We are extending the celebration of Father’s day this year by dressing like one. Like father, like daughter. Guess it’s in our jeans (just a little dad joke for you).
Daisy was known and loved by many. Especially the many that attend country concerts every year. We will always remember her through that one lovely quote from Katy Perry’s “California Girls:”
“Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top.”
Although many people still wear and honor Daisy in the summertime, the return of the long short is a trend that stands out.
Denim has always been the heart of America and jorts are the veins. But ever since summer 2021, short shorts are out and the long shorts are in. Looks like they’re sticking around for 2022. These shorts hit right at the knee or just above. So really they should be called “mediums.” Next summer all of our jorts will end up looking like this:
Retail stores are now carrying these types of women's shorts under the name bermuda shorts or 90’s shorts. There hasn’t been this number of jorts in a store since walking into at a hardware store during the Fourth of July weekend sale in the 90’s.
Some A-list celebrities have even fallen victim to the Bermuda triangle of denim. Just look at Gigi Hadid for example. Her shorts are flying high one summer and dropping low the next. Honorable mention, we can’t forget about our style icon, Mr. Harry Styles loves a jorts moment.
It seems that jorts have transformed from a casual night in a beer stained hole-in-the-wall bar to a business meeting over cocktails on a patio. Jorts have grown up into a fashion statement and a trend. On Instagram and TikTok, people dress up in long shorts with a button-up top or some fancy loafers. The days of paring jorts with grease stained t-shirts are over.
If you are still attached to good ol’ Daisy, look at the bright side to switching from short to long shorts:
You only have to shave half of your leg.
Decreased amount of wedgies.
If you don’t feel like buying them, you can borrow them from your mom.
Your dad will most likely approve of them… then ask you to mow the lawn.
Big. Pockets. Need I say more?
Although jorts are a trend, it doesn’t mean you have to like them. Same goes with other trends like tiny sunglasses and one-ear piercings, they’re not for everyone! So whether you are a die-hard daisy dukes kind of person or are will to try something longer, something that shorts will always be is a summer staple.
Fashion trends of the future are starting to become just trends resurrected from the past, specifically the 90’s. We’ve seen this before with scrunchies and Dr. Martens shoes. There’s something about the 90’s that style-setters of 2022 seem to love. So while a good chunk of fashion is composed of modern style trends, fashion blasts-from-the-pasts have seem to snuck their way into society. These jorts have done just that and we might as well start saying, “Luke, you look like your father.”
