Vikings host the Colts Sunday night.
Gophers men’s hoops plays Hamline to begin regular season Tuesday.
Wild Falls to Earth with 7-5 Loss in Philly
The most shocking thing about the Wild’s first regulation loss of the season, a 7-5 decision in Philadelphia on Saturday, was that Filip Gustavsson was around to see the end of it. The Gus Bus has been good this year, but was not Saturday, and i’ll question John Hynes’ decision to skate him out for the third for quite some time.
Gustavsson allowed two goals on his first three shots faced, and after the Wild rallied for a 3-2 lead in the second, he immediately gave up the game-tying goal. At 3-3 heading into the third, one has to think bringing in Marc-Andre Fleury was discussed, but it didn’t happen. The Wild had outshot the Flyers 21-6 through two.
The Wild actually took a 4-3 lead early in the third after Marcus Foligno’s second goal, and even after back-to-back Flyers goals, the game was tied 5-5 and apparently headed to overtime when Gus allowed his sixth goal with 2:24 left.
Two nights off in Pittsburgh before the Wild plays the finale of this seven-game road trip on Tuesday. They return home to face Tampa Bay on Friday to begin a three-game homestand.
Wolves Beat Toronto in Home Opener; Two Playoff Rematches on Tap This Week
The Wolves were never seriously threatened in a 112-101 home-opening win over Toronto on Saturday. They’ve got a pair of playoff rematches at Target Center on national TV this week - Dallas on Tuesday and Denver on Friday.
Julius Randle and Anthony Edwards each had 24 points for the Wolves. Randle added nine rebounds and five assists.
I’m worried about Mike Conley - 2-for-9 from the field. He’s looked slow to start the season. I love the way Donte Divincenzo plays, but he missed 10-of-15 shots against Toronto.
Gopher FB Crushes Maryland in Homecoming Game
There haven’t been many laughers like this in the P.J. Fleck era. The Gophers rolled Maryland 48-23 on Homecoming on Saturday, in a game that wasn’t nearly as close as the 25-point differential made it seem.
The Gophers have won three in a row - how glaring is that loss at Michigan now - heading into Saturday’s winnable game at No. 20 Illinois (11 a.m.).
Max Brosmer threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns, including two tone-setting scores early. Justin Walley returned an interception for a touchdown. Minnesota native Koi Perich added his third interception in the past two games, upping his conference-best total to five, the most ever by a Minnesota freshman. He is now just two picks behind the program's season record.
The 5-3 Gophers (3-2 in Big 10) need one win over their final four games to be bowl eligible.
Gopher Hockey Teams Both Sweep
The Gopher men easily swept St. Thomas by a combined 13-3 margin, including a 6-2 route at The X. Minnesota has scored five or more goals in five of its six games this season. They open up Big 10 play at Penn State this weekend.
The Gopher women got back into the win column twice against Minnesota State, although after a blowout win on Friday they needed Peyton Hemp’s overtime goal Saturday for a 3-2 win. The Gophers only sit in sixth in the WCHA - they’re behind St. Thomas - but they’ll be heavy favorites to sweep 0-6-0 Bemidji on the road this weekend.
Loons Open Playoffs Tuesday in Salt Lake
The Loons finished the regular season on quite the run, and it’ll be interesting to see where the week and a half off leaves them heading into their round one series against Real Salt Lake.
Game 1 is Tuesday at 7:50 p.m. in Salt Lake. That game is on FS1 which is helpful for the sports fans who don’t have Apple TV. Game 2 of the best-of-three is Saturday in Saint Paul.
A reminder there’s no OT in the MLS playoffs. Straight to penalty kicks.
