Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 7.18.24

Kyle Okposo brings the Stanley Cup back to his home state this weekend, unfathomably at Pagel Arena in Minnetonka and not one of the fine rinks in his home city of Saint Paul.

British Open is underway at Royal Troon. Tiger tees off at 8:37 central.

MLB All-Star Game is just not entertaining. Too many good relievers throwing gas in the fourth through ninth innings.

Maybe Caitlin Clark will be ok in the WNBA (ya think?). WNBA record 19 assists last night.

Loons Allow Two Late Goals, Winless Streak Hits Nine

You’ve got to hope this is rock bottom for the loons, but you have to wonder.

Minnesota appeared poised to end its eight-game winless streak, before allowing two back-to-back goals in the 90th minute of a 3-2 loss to D.C. United at Allianz Field. D.C. had never scored a goal at Allianz Field, going 0-3 prior to last night.

There are 12 games left in the MLS season, and despite the last month and a half (Mnnesota last won June 1), the Loons are somehow in the final playoff spot right now.

It really put a damper on a great evening that started with a Make a Wish - youngster Carter Lucerol was granted a wish of scoring an MLS goal.

Lynx Hit Olympic Break with Win Over Dream

I saw the Lynx in person for the first time this season, along with thousands of mostly elementary schoolers for the Kids Game. Ears still ringing…

Minnesota came out on top, 86-79, and it’s clear they’ll need Napheesa Collier back in the lineup after the Olympic Break. The Lynx grinded this one out thanks to 30 points from Kayle McBride and 16 fourth-quarter points from backup guard Natisha Hiedeman.

The Dream had lost 14 of 17 overall entering the game.

Minnesota is 17-8 and tied with Seattle atop the Western Conference standings. Before the Olympic Break, a team of WNBA All-Stars coached by legend Cheryl Miller will play the U.S. National team coached by Cheryl Reeve on Saturday.
