Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 7.26.24

Last night was the first Thursday without football until February…

Working on a cool story for early next week about a local family who pulled out all the stops to get to Joe Mauer’s Hall of Fame induction…

Olympics Opening Ceremony today - 12:30 p.m. live or 6:30 p.m. on delay on NBC. Coco Gauff and LeBron the flag bearers.

Here’s what I’m watching this weekend:

Saturday

9 a.m. (NBC) - Rugby semifinals. I feel like rugby is the curling of the Summer Games. On all the time during the day - even this week before the Olympics started. These guys are bruts.

1:15 p.m. (E!) - Canoe slalom qualifying. One of the most ridiculous Olympic events.

3 p.m. (NBC) - U.S. vs. Canada in women’s Beach Volleyball. They’re playing in front of the Eiffel Tower, easily the most scenic place they’ve ever played Olympic beach volleyball.

Sunday

4:40 a.m. (E!/NBC) - Our first look at Simon Biles, Suni Lee and the rest of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team in first round qualifying

10:15 a.m. (NBC) - Heavily favored U.S. men’s basketball takes on Serbia in the lidlifter. Nikola Jokic and Anthony Edwards playoff rematch, anyone?

2:30 p.m. (NBC) - Britain’s Adam Peaty goes in the 100 meter breaststroke, trying to match Michael Phelps as the only swimmers with gold medals in the same sport in three straight Olympics. Peaty had not competed much since 2020, taking some time off for himself. American Nik Funk is a major challenger

Twins Take Series from Phillies

Games against the ho hum Tigers and Mets may give Twins brass some thoughts on how much to beg the Pohlads for cash for a trade next week.

The Twins just took two of three from MLB leading Philadelphia. They’re on the road in Detroit this weekend.

Minnesota enters the week 4.5 games behind Cleveland for first, and a game up on Kansas City.

Loons in Seattle for XL Liga Cup Opener

Seattle has never lost an MLS game - 9-0 including the playoffs - at home to the Loons, and they’ll be favored to stretch that to 10-0 even though tonight’s XM Liga match isn’t an MLS match.

The Leagues Cup is losing popularity, and fast. Not to mention all the Mexican teams have to play every game on the road. It’s an unnecessary break in an already long MLS season.
