Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 8.13.24

Nashville used to be one of my favorite road cities, but they’ve paved paradise and put up some celebrity bars. Long live Tootsie’s, but 90 percent of Broadway is just awful. Also reminded how not spicy Minnesotans are, as my “6” spice level of hot chicken was a little strong.

Red Sock Jarren Duran pretty fortunate to just lose two games’ pay over his anti gay slur at the plate.

Did WNBA Las Vegas trade a player for getting pregnant? Seems that way. Becky Hammon was on a fast track to an NBA head coaching job, that track has been muddied after this lawsuit.

Lynx back at it Thursday against Washington with Olympic gold medalists Cheryl Reeve and Napheesia Collier.

Twins Snap Two-Game Skid Against Royals but Lose Buxton

Newsworthy few days for the Twins, who will get a look at top pitching prospect Zebby Matthews tonight at Target Field against the Royals. That’s because Joe Ryan’s season could be over with a Grade 2 teres strain suffered last week. Rocco Baldelli’s optimism didn’t last long on that injury. And last night, Byron Buxton left the game with a hip tweak. A tweak is never a tweak with Buck of course, although he’s listed as day to day.

The Twins looked poised to take over the division, taking a doubleheader from Cleveland on Friday, but the Guardians won the final two of the series.

Last night in an important series opener against Kansas City, the Twins beat the Royals 8-3 to move a game and a half up on Kansas City in the wild card standings.

Pablo Lopez - still not the No. 1 starter with Ryan out, thanks to Bailey Ober - allowed only two earned runs in six innings. Lopez just has to be good over the final seven weeks of the season.

Royce Lewis hit his 15th home run in 40 games - that’s a 60-home run pace.

Vikings Beat Raiders, but McCarthy Sidelined

No. 10 overall pick J.J. McCarthy impressed in the Vikings’ 24-23 pre-season opening win against the Raiders on Saturday, but by Monday night he wasn’t even healthy enough to participate in a Vikings’ open practice.

McCarthy completed 11-of-17 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns to help the Vikings rally from a 13-point halftime deficit. But he had knee soreness to keep him off the field last night.

The Vikings are at the Browns Saturday in pre-season game No. 2.
