Stanzel’s Sports Takeout — BREAKING NEWS: 9.13.24
Twins cut sixth-round draft pick for tipping pitches to help his team lose because he wanted the season to be over and not make the playoffs.
Twins Hope Final 16 are Sweet
The Twins wound up taking two of three from the Angels, and gained more ground on yesterday’s off day. They head into this weekend’s three-game series against Cincinnati at Target Field 3.5 games back of Detroit, their nearest pursuer for the final Wild Card spot.
The Twins, who have two starting pitchers you can count on most nights, play 16 of the next 17 days to end the season. But they get Byron Buxton back tonight.
Not that they’re looking ahead, but a four-game set with Cleveland starts Monday in Ohio. The Guardians are suddenly flirting with the No. 1 overall seed in the American League.
Vikings Host 49ers
In the last 24 hours, there have been reports that 49ers star RB Christian McCaffrey has been “ready to go” and a “longshot” to play in Sunday’s noon game at the Vikings. Best guess is we won’t actually find out until mid-morning Sunday when inactives are listed.
I’m working the game for Niners radio, doing stats for the great Greg Papa.
San Francisco is a 5.5-point favorite, but I think the Vikings probably keep it closer than that in the home opener. Niners by a field goal.
Lynx at Chicago Tonight; Trying to Avoid Caitlin Clark in First Round
The Lynx visits Chicago tonight. With four games left in the regular season, the Lynx trails New York for first overall by 3.5 games. The teams meet Sunday.
However, more importantly, the Lynx holds just a one-game lead on Phoenix for third overall. The third seed at this point looks to be Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever. The No. 2 seed probably plays Phoenix.
Gophers Host Nevada in Non-Conference Finale
Minnesota plays its last non conference game, a 2:30 p.m. home tilt Saturday against Nevada.
The Gophers try to (and should) push their record to 2-1 before starting B10 play against Iowa at home next Saturday.
Loons Back in Action in St. Louis
What a mess of the MLS season the Leagues Cup makes. WIth seven games left in the playoffs, the Loons have played just two games that matter since July 20. Today is September 13.
MNUFC’s latest break is two weeks and ends tomorrow when the Loons are in St. Louis, which is one of just five teams below them in the Western Conference standings. The Loons are clinging to the ninth playoff spot which would mean a one-game play-in.
