Congrats to Matt Cullen, soon to be enshrined in Eveleth’s U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.

PWHL names and logos coming Monday. Sure seems like they’ll be the Superior. Meh. Don’t tell that to the 218-ers in your life. New GM Melissa Caruso will have her hands full smoothing things over with the fan base. She’s one of us, a Saint Paul native.

Lynx at Caitlin Clark’s Fever, winners of five straight, tonight.

Love having Americans in the final four in Flushing, just wish I was young enough to watch night matches at The U.S. Open in 2024. Jessica Pegula is remarkably well grounded for someone whose parents have run multiple professional teams into the ground.

I predict the NFL won’t be back to Brazil after tonight’s Packers game.

Buxton’s Rehab Cut Short; Will Miss Critical Series Against Royals

The Twins split four games in Tampa Bay and head into Kansas City for a crucial three-game set, but their biggest news came off the field yesterday.

Hours before a 4-3 win over the Rays behind a resurgent Pablo Lopez, the Twins announced that Byron Buxton’s rehab stint in Saint Paul was shut down due to hip discomfort. Ironically enough, he’d been tossed out of a game for the Saints for arguing balls and strikes. So, instead of meeting the team in K.C. today, you’ve got to seriously wonder if we’ve seen the last of Buxton in 2024.

And the same for Max Kepler, who tried to play through tendinitis in his knee, but the team had to shut him down. How dire is it in the outfield for the Twins? Twenty-seven year old rookie DeShawn Keirsey Jr. made his MLB debut in Tampa yesterday in the heat of a pennant race.

And yet, with no Carlos Correa (nowhere close), Buxton, Kepler, Joe Ryan, Manny Margot and others, the Twins are pretty secure in the wild card. They’re five games clear of missing the playoffs. The Twins are four back of Cleveland with 22 games to play, including three games head-to-head.

Vikings at Giants Sunday

Don’t adjust your TV sets Sunday at noon when the Vikings take on the Giants at The Meadowlands. The Giants are really wearing these uniforms.

Sam Darnold isn’t a great quarterback, but he’s serviceable. For the second straight season the Vikings will be one injury away from catastrophe.

With an injured J.J. McCarthy a year away, you have to wonder how long Justin Jefferson goes before he starts having thoughts in his head. They’re probably there already. He’s well paid, but everyone wants to win, don’t they?

Vikings are 1.5-point favorites. I’d take the Giants, but you know, been a fan for 46 years…

Lions over Bengals in the Super Bowl (I’m not drunk).

Gophers Welcome Rhode Island

You can’t take anything for granted, but you’d hope the Gophers can find a way to beat FCS member Rhode Island on Saturday. Gametime at The U is 11 a.m. Peacock has the broadcast, including Kyle Rudolph as the color analyst.

It’s the first ever meeting between the Gophers and the Rams, who beat Holy Cross in their season opener. Had to throw that in there for a trigger, Gopher hockey fans.
