Can You Keep A Secret? Episode 3: Ryan Carter

Ryan Carter wasn’t born on second base. He was born in White Bear Lake, and still lives there today. You could call him “salt of the earth,” but salt isn’t great on ice.

Ryan Carter didn’t come from a prominent hockey family, the last name on his jersey didn’t automatically earn him a spot on the coveted “A” team roster. Ryan Carter earned it.

It may have all started when Carter listened to a coach in juniors who told him a more rugged game would appeal to colleges, scouts, and pro teams. Boy, did he listen. And it led to 500+ games in the NHL over a ten-year career, and his name engraved on the Stanley Cup.

True to form, the Can You Keep a Secret? Podcast doesn’t spend much time talking puck with Carter. Instead we delved into a myriad of off-ice topics starting with his palatial estate located on the Augusta National of Ramsey County, Gem Lake Hills golf course. His role as one of the many entrepreneurs in the “Mankato Mafia,” having recently partnered with fellow Minnesota State Mankato alum, Adam Thielen, on ETS Performance centers.

In this life you’re either play-by-play, or you’re a color guy. Ryan Carter is the latter, living up to his reputation with stories of being an usher at Lambeau Field, eating rabbit at his billet home in juniors, and enduring what may be one of the most exotic injuries in all of hockey. If that’s not enough for you, Carts also explains what it’s like for a hockey guy to become a soccer dad, and shares some tales from his White Bear Lake childhood that will make you want to watch Stand By Me again.
